Miguel, 1999, “Urban impressions”, Instant
China, Notes on an urban transformation, 2G International Architecture Review,
N.10, 1999/II, pp.14-27
Clichés are difficult to avoid with China. Nearly all
books and articles on the country begin by referring to its vast size, its
enormous population, its arcane culture, its turbulent jistory, its striking
contrasts. And yet even for the casual visitor it is impossible to escape such
ever-present realities.
The first impression is, inevitably, of hugeness.
…China is most certainly a country of contrasts and
unbalances. But, even more importantly, it is a largely unknown country.
A powerful sensation of barely controlled chaos
pervades the urban atmosphere of the Chinese city. Everything actually works,
even if it looks as though it will not, much as a self-organized magma
exemplifies the postulates of Chaos Theory.
